Wind Turbine Optimisation

Design Optimisation Individual Project | Year 4 IDE
October 2020 | 3 Weeks

The aim of this assignment was to use computational optimisation techniques to find the best geometry for the blades of a 1m diameter wind turbine. The wind turbine blade was to be modelled mathematically in MATLAB using an iterative solver and aerodynamic lookup tables for an S822 blade profile. However, the optimisation method used was left for us to decide. I chose to implement a full-factorial / latin hypercube DoE (design of experiments), along with a genetic algorithm, with both techniques making use of the same underlying object-oriented blade model.
